Tips on how to drive safely near school buses and in school zones

Its back-to-school time, and you know what that means…

Yes, winter is right around the corner - but it also says school buses are out in full force. While many feel they know the rules associated with driving on the same road as the iconic yellow transporter, there are still certain guidelines that might be a little fuzzy for people.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that there is an average of 139 fatalities each year involving school bus-related crashes, with only about 8-percent of those having to do with children on the bus, and a whopping 72-percent having to do with other motorists. Its imperative that drivers on the roadway are conscious of their surroundings, and when passing a school zone or coming upon a stopped bus, theres certain rules to follow.

•    Do not pass a school bus on the right, or one that is stopped to pick up or drop off children. Except for the fact that its illegal, its also very dangerous.
•    When a bus traveling in the same direction as you is stopped, you must stop as well.
•    Like a stop light, when the light on the bus flashes yellow, be prepared to stop. Then, when they turn red, come to a complete stop.
•    The area ten feet around the bus is where the highest risk is, so make sure to keep your distance when kids get picked up or dropped off.
•    If you live near a school, make sure to be cautious when backing out of your driveway.
•    Roads near schools have lower speed limits, and are strictly enforced, so make sure to slow down when you enter a school zone.

So ensure that kids have a safe school year by following these simple rules. If youre in the market for a new or pre-owned car or SUV, visit your local Acura dealer at Mullers Woodfield Acura in Hoffman Estates.
